APRIL IS RALEIGH HISTORY MONTH!

Explore and celebrate Raleigh’s rich history all month at the ten sites of the Raleigh Heritage Trail with these events and programs scheduled for April 2010!

African-American Cultural Complex

  • The African American Cultural Complex museum has a unique collection of artifacts, documents and displays of outstanding contributions made by African Americans that are housed in several buildings along a picturesque nature trail. The museum is open by appointment only. Call (919) 250-9336 to schedule a tour.

Haywood Hall House and Gardens

  • Haywood Hall is open every Thursday from 10:30am until 1:30 p.m. To schedule a private tour, please call (919) 832-8357.

Historic Oak View County Park

  • Carolina Mountains Film Series: Cold Mountain
    Apr. 3, 1 p.m.
    Join us in the Farm History Center to watch a movie and enjoy free popcorn, and stay a guided tour of The Carolina Mountains exhibition after the movie! Call (919) 250-1013 for more information.

Historic Yates Mill County Park

  • History Detective Day
    Saturday, Apr. 17, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
    Bring out the sleuth in you by participating in a scavenger hunt that explores some of the fun things you can do at the park. Hear how Yates Mill came to be & about what the mill community was like historically. Delve into the park’s “Passport to History” trunk to discover a treasure trove of historical objects & earn a “History Detective” badge. Call (919) 856-6675 for more information.

Joel Lane Museum House

  • A Lecture on “18th-Century
    Architecture in North Carolina”
    Apr. 8, 7 p.m.
    The Joel Lane Museum House is proud to announce a lecture by Peter Sandbeck, the Administrator of the N.C. State Historic Preservation Office on “18th-Century Architecture in North Carolina ” in the Visitors Center at 160 South Saint Mary’s Street, Raleigh, NC 27603. Admission will be $15 for the public and $10 for members of the Joel Lane Historical Society. Refreshments will be served. Seating is limited, and advanced payment is strongly recommended. Mordecai Historic Park

  • Historic Raleigh Trolley Tours
    Every Saturday in April
    Take an hour long tour of downtown Raleigh from an old point of view on the Raleigh Trolley. Cost is $8 for adults. Call (919) 857-4364 to get your tickets over the phone. Tickets can also be purchased in the Mordecai House gift shop.


North Carolina State Capitol

  • Raleigh Occupied living history event
    Apr. 10, Tours start at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
    A Civil War era troop encampment and character interpretations will recall the April 1865 occupation of the State Capitol by troops of Union General William T. Sherman. Visitors will meet costumed interpreters portraying former governors, a local plantation wife, a Union officer and a newly freed slave. Characters are based on personal letters, diaries and period accounts, and will speak about hardships they have endured, life in Raleigh, and their hopes and dreams for the future. Pre-registration encouraged.

  • Capitol Lecture Series: Rufus Edmisten, "Reflecting on the Watergate Scandal"
    Apr. 11, 2:30 p.m.
    Before serving as North Carolina's Secretary of State, Rufus Edmisten worked as staff counsel for the Senate Watergate Committee with Sen. Sam Ervin. Edmisten was 28 years old when he served the subpoena to President Nixon at the White House for the Watergate tapes. In this presentation, Edmisten will give a firsthand account of his role in one of the most shocking episodes in American history. Presented with the Wake County Historical Society.

Raleigh City Museum

  • Fayetteville Street Walking Tour for Kids
    Apr. 10, 2-3 p.m.
    Explore Raleigh's main street on this fun walking tour of Fayetteville Street. Help solve the Governor's Mansion mystery and learn what US president was born right here in Raleigh. Admission is free. Space is limited. Call (919) 832-3775 to reserve your space!
  • Capital Canines
    Apr. 17, 1-3 p.m.
    Take a historic downtown stroll with man's best friend as we introduce our first-ever walking tour for people and their dogs. This tour expands beyond Fayetteville Street and explores the city's original five squares and surrounding landmarks. Admission is $10 per dog for museum members and $15 per dog for non-members and space is limited. Dogs must be up to date on all vaccines and get along with other dogs and people.   • Obama in North Carolina: The Path to History
    Apr. 10, 2 p.m.
    To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of SNCC on Shaw's campus in April, we are featuring this documentary film by Cash Michaels, editor of the Carolinian newspaper.
